AI Search & AI Visibility
These acronyms overlap and are not universally standardized. A practical comparison, and how CLIXERA uses AIO.

SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO are used differently by vendors, consultants and publishers. There is no single industry body that has frozen the definitions. Treat the labels as useful shorthand, not as a regulated taxonomy.
If you run a growing business, you do not need to pick a camp. You need a loop: compare your public presence with competitors, understand the gap, prioritize work, act, and re-test.
Use this table as a working vocabulary, not as a claim that the industry has agreed.
| Term | Usually means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Helping search engines crawl, understand and rank content | A guaranteed #1 ranking |
| AEO | Making content extractable as a direct answer | A guaranteed featured snippet or AI citation |
| GEO | Helping generative systems understand and cite an entity | A paid placement inside ChatGPT or Gemini |
| AIO | In CLIXERA, an umbrella for readiness across AI-assisted experiences | An industry-standard certification or ranking product |
Yes. SEO remains the foundation for being crawlable, understandable and findable in classic search — and often a prerequisite for being understood elsewhere.
Google’s public guidance continues to emphasize helpful, people-first content. Bing’s webmaster guidelines still emphasize indexable, useful pages. AI-assisted answers often draw on the same public web.
What SEO does not do by itself is answer every recommendation-style question. You can rank and still look vague to an answer engine if the business is poorly explained.
AEO is often used when the job is to be a clear answer, not only a ranked page. GEO is often used when the job is to be understandable or citable by a generative system.
Both ideas overlap with good SEO: entity clarity, useful content, consistent facts. Neither is a secret ranking factor Google or OpenAI has published as a product you can buy.
CLIXERA uses AIO (AI Optimization) as an umbrella for improving readiness, clarity, authority and discoverability across AI-assisted experiences. That is a CLIXERA usage, not a claim that the rest of the industry has agreed.
In the product, AI Search is one category beside SEO, website, reviews and listings. The output is competitive context and Growth Hub work — not a guaranteed mention.
None of these labels guarantee rankings, citations or recommendations. Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and other platforms decide what they show. Improving clarity and consistency is still worth doing because it helps customers and systems understand you.
