In 2026, “being online” is not one channel. Customers still search. They also ask AI systems for recommendations, check maps, read reviews and then decide whether a website earns the enquiry.
Those steps are not a strict funnel. Someone may start in an assistant, skip Google, and still end on your profile. Someone else may search a keyword, open three map pins, and never visit a website.
A journey with more than one entrance
A useful picture looks like this:
- 1AI Search
- 2Google Search
- 3Google Maps / Local
- 4Reviews
- 5Website
- 6Decision
Treat that as connected surfaces, not a mandatory order. The job for a growing business is to be understandable on each surface that actually sends you work — and to measure those surfaces against competitors, not in isolation.
What still matters on each surface
AI Search. Conversational questions compress the market into a short answer. Clarity of name, services, location and proof helps. Guarantees do not exist.
Google Search. Keyword search is not dead. Crawlable pages, clear titles and useful content still matter. The results page may also include maps, reviews and AI-generated summaries.
Maps / local. For many small businesses, maps decide who gets the call. Profile quality, categories, hours and consistent name-address-phone details still participate in that race.
Reviews. Rating, volume, recency and responses are both a discovery signal and a decision filter. Read them next to competitors.
Website. The last proof before contact. Slow, vague or silent pages waste the visibility you already paid for.

What a small-business owner should do this month
Do not try to win every surface in the same week. Confirm who your real online competitors are. Look at search, maps, reviews, website and AI Search together. Name the largest honest gap you can influence. Turn it into a task. Re-test.
That is more useful than another acronym, and more honest than a promise that any platform will feature you.
